How to spend your days in Osaka – Japan

Osaka is a modern Japanese city and the country’s third-largest one. We had a blast during our time in Osaka, but strangely we now find it hard to give you recommendations on what to do. Even though there are popular sights, we spent our days eating street food, wandering around the crazy neighborhoods, and checking out some fun stores ( like the one that only sold fluorescent colored wigs). Osaka is like the sloppy brother of Tokyo: things seem less organized, and the people, in general, are more relaxed and chilled out.

This is the kind of place that we love to enjoy without itinerary or checklists. Nevertheless, we’ll leave you here a few tips.

Dōtonbori

Dotonbori is the heart of the city, known for its neon lights, flashy adds, and lively energy. Dotonbori Street runs parallel to the canal and it’s a must while in Osaka. Actually, it will be quite hard for you to miss it!

Horie and american-mura DISTRICTs

You can easily spend an afternoon strolling around these two areas. Expect trendy cafes, thrift-shops, and independent fashion brands. We also found some of the coolest interior design stores – it’s a shame we’re only traveling with our backpacks!

EAT!

There’s a famous proverb throughout Japan saying: Dress into ruin in Kyoto, eat into ruin in Osaka. It pretty much wraps up the amount of love for food than runs in the city. Okonomiyaki, Yakiniku, or Takoyaki are just a few examples of delicious food you’ll hear about during your visit.

osaka castle

Take the train at JR Osaka Station and travel to the Osaka Castle Park. The building is very impressive, with beautiful gardens surrounding it. Even though we’ve decided to skip it, it’s a famous landmark in Osaka, with a strong historical background.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN

If you’re a theme park enthusiast, set a day aside for the Universal Studios Japan. We heard the waiting lines can be extremely long, so you might consider getting the express pass ticket
