Yakitori
Yakitori is a traditional dish that you must try while in Tokyo. It’s very popular among the Japanese, and quite inexpensive.
On our first night in the country, we headed to Omoide Yokocho (more commonly known as Piss Alley) to grab something to eat. On this tiny alley, you’ll find many restaurants and Izakayas – casual drinking establishments, with small plates as well. In this narrow street, choosing where to eat is as hard as finding an empty seat. We’ve decided to trust our gut feeling and waited for a space at the table you see on the pictures below. It was packed with locals, something that always makes us feel more confident about the quality of a place. It was SO worth the wait!
This small spot is called Sasamoto. Although it doesn’t have a menu, the friendly staff will make some recommendations and serve you according to your preferences. Among many options, they have beef, different parts of pork and vegetables cooked in miso soup. Everything is so delicious! Order some beer or Sake, so it tastes even better!
It’s hard to put into words how much we loved our experience in Sasamoto. The fact that we were all so close together at the table, made it possible for everyone to meet and talk to each other. We even met a Hong Kong couple who travels to Tokyo every year, and always stops by Sasamoto! The best way to prove to you how much we enjoyed ourselves? We went back there on our last night in Japan, 15 days later.
Sneakpeek Tip: We’ve found this official website of Omoide Yokocho, where you can visualize a map of the alley!
