Why You Should Add Bacalar To Your Mexico Itinerary

A friend of ours, born and raised in Mexico, told us to put Bacalar on top of our destinations list in Yucatan. And as soon as we saw some pictures of this magical place, we immediately knew that we needed to visit it.
Whether this is your first-time hearing about Bacalar, or if you have already fallen in love with the pictures you saw from this place, here are our reasons to visit this beautiful town.

1) The Lagoon

Bacalar does not have sand beaches, but it has a magnificent Lagoon that can be enjoyed in numerous ways. The color of the water is insane, and you’ll find it hard to convince your friends that you haven’t used any filter on your Instagram photos. It is known as the Lake of Seven Colors as it changes its color depending on the time in the day and the intensity of the sunshine. Most of the activities take place on the water, and it’s easy to understand why! Take a swim on one of the three cenotes, join a boat tour, try stand-up paddleboarding, or just relax at one of the many bars by the lake.

2) Few tourists

Bacalar is getting more and more popular, but nothing compared to its neighbor Tulum or Isla de las Mujeres! It is possible to travel to the Yucatan peninsula and find your own piece of paradise, away from the tourist crowds and big resorts. And the little town of Bacalar is the living proof of that!

These off-the-beaten-track locations are often quite remote and hard to get to. The best part is that you can easily fit Bacalar into your itinerary as it is just a two-hours drive away from Tulum. Even if you haven’t rented a car, you can easily hop on a bus and get there by yourself. Try to stay at least two nights to slowly enjoy this peaceful little town. Relax and get a taste of this remote and beautiful paradise.

3) La Playita Restaurant

We apologize to all the restaurants we didn’t try in Bacalar, but we couldn’t get enough of La Playita. It’s located right by the lake, and the interior design is just stunning, with huge trees in the middle of the restaurant and a friendly (yet sometimes slow) staff. There was live music, a vibrant atmosphere, and we had so much fun that we returned there on our second night. The food was so good! We only wish to have tried more dishes on the menu.

Even though we absolutely loved La Playita, we don’t want anyone to be hungry while in Mexico. So, here’s a list of other places to eat in Bacalar:

  • Nixtamal
  • El Manati
  • Yerbabuena
  • Mango Y Chile
  • Bote de Leche
  • Mi Burrito

4) Stunning Places to stay

It’s no secret we love finding gorgeous and unique places to stay. Even more in such a special place like Bacalar! As there are many eco-boutique cabanas/lodges located right by the Lake, deciding to stay at one of them can be the highlight of your trip. Moreover, you’ll notice the cheaper prices when compared to the busiest and “trendiest” spots of Yucatan. You’ll get the best of both worlds!
