When we first got to Ubud, it seemed very different from the “Eat, Pray, Love” retreat we had imagined. The traffic was terrible, tourists were everywhere, and the city center was not what we had pictured as the perfect place to explore our inner selves.
Nonetheless, as soon as we started exploring the area, we understood that we could still find hidden gems. And Uma Kalai is a vivid example of that! Tucked in the heart of Ubud, it is designed to combine a serene atmosphere without compromising a central location for everyone who comes to explore this special part of Bali.
With only six villas and suites, staying at Uma Kalai feels intimate and offers an ultra-personal service. We had our own private pool, garden, living room, outdoor deck with a two-person swing, and even a steam room! Everything smells amazing, the furniture is brand new, and we just felt so comfortable during our stay. We were actually surprised by the high-end amenities we found in our room: a wireless mobile phone charger, a Japanese toilet with a heated seat, a Nespresso machine, and high speed wifi – just to name a few!
Despite the room being beyond amazing, we must say that the common area was the highlight of Uma Kalai. The property stands on the edge of the jungle, with panoramic views of Sayan’s rice field. We had a healthy breakfast every morning in this beautiful setting, which was an invigorating way to start the day. The menu is filled with homemade juices and some gluten-free options.
Furthermore, there’s a range of top-notch treatments in the peaceful spa, for those who are looking to fully embrace the local spirituality. Also, there’s a fully equipped gym if exercising the body is more your style.
Last but not least, our experience was enhanced by the incredible staff, including Uma Kalai’s manager, Eka. They were always available through Whatsapp and ready to go above and beyond to make sure we were having a wonderful time. Eka sent us a full list of the best places to eat and was happy to help us schedule any activity we had in mind.
