During our time in Merida, we were lucky enough to stay at Casa Vagantes Montejo. This exquisite project is part of a group of 4 hidden retreats that were restored and developed to welcome travelers who value authenticity, design, and comfort. Each house was recovered to meet the needs of the present, without forgetting the details of the past. And that’s what makes it so special.
We stayed at the one near Paseo Montejo (which we didn’t know at the time but it’s a popular avenue with much going on!) and the house blends so perfectly into the surroundings that it’s hard to understand it is actually an Airbnb. It made us feel like locals which we absolutely loved! Although we had a car, we never used it – it helps that Merida is a very safe city, so even at night, we walked everywhere.
As soon as we entered Casa Vagantes, we could tell there was a lot of work and passion involved in the project. The philosophy behind it was all about recovering these buildings without destroying the beauty of the old. The interior walls were scraped to showcase the different colors they have gone through, and the doors and windows are still the original ones. The antique furniture was carefully chosen and represents Mexico at its best.
The house is much bigger than what we needed for our 3-days visit, so definitely consider it if you’re staying longer! It even has a courtyard with a small pool for the hotter days. This architectural project is definitely one of a kind, and we only wish to have stayed longer.
Our special thanks to Gina: not only for her great tips but also for making us feel so at home while so far from it.
