Just two hours from Cape Town, we turned off the main road and into a landscape impossible to forget. Mountains rising quietly in the distance. A vast lagoon catching the light. And that feeling that we were about to slow down.
Coot Club doesn’t announce itself loudly. It doesn’t need to. It sits there, effortlessly beautiful, as if it has always belonged to the land.
Our days began with the sunrise. Not because we set an alarm — but because nature did. The light spilling through the windows, birds already awake, the air still cool and fresh.
We had breakfast in long wooden tables set under the trees. Maria wandered barefoot while we had coffee in one hand and saw delicious plates coming to our direction. Coot Club is wonderfully family-friendly, but in the most simple way. There are no bright plastic playgrounds or forced entertainment. Children are simply… included.

Our two-year-old was free to explore, to run, to exist in nature rather than be contained by it. And yet, at no point did it feel like a “kids’ resort.” Couples would love it just as much. The setting is undeniably romantic.
What truly surprised us, though, was the design. The décor — both in the main house and across the individual cottages — is spectacular. Thought through to the smallest detail, full of corners to discover, textures, books, collected pieces, and quiet design moments that make you stop and look twice.
From one-bedroom cottages perfect for couples to the most incredible four-bedroom houses ideal for families or groups of friends (seriously… why is this so far from Portugal? sniff), each space feels curated but never overdone. Elegant without being pretentious. Comfortable without losing character.
The main house itself is something else entirely. There’s a dedicated children’s area that feels like it belongs in a design magazine — a beautiful room filled with books, wooden toys, and thoughtful details. No plastic chaos. Just warmth and imagination. There’s also a small cinema room where a children’s film is shown every evening, and a games room that older kids (and adults) quietly gravitate towards. It’s surreal — the kind of attention to detail that makes you realise this place has been designed with real families in mind.

Our favourite part was probably the sundowners. Late afternoon, drinks in hand. The lagoon and mountains as a backdrop, the sky turning soft shades of pink above us. The kids playing together — no screens, no distractions. Just laughter echoing across the grass. What a magical memory.
From day one, the staff greeted us by name. Not in a formal way — in a genuine one. We got to know Jana during our stay, as she was the one taking us sandboarding on the dunes — yes, even with our two-year-old. Afterwards, we had a picnic on a completely deserted beach. Just us, the ocean, and miles of untouched shoreline. We even spotted a seal — which instantly became the highlight of the entire adventure for Maria.
It’s hard to explain, but despite being only two hours from Cape Town, it felt like we were really in Africa. Big skies. Raw beauty. Life dictated by the sun and not by notifications.
We left sandy, rested, slightly sun-kissed — and deeply grateful.
Coot Club isn’t flashy luxury. It’s barefoot luxury. It’s space. It’s connection. It’s watching your child play freely while the sun sets behind the mountains. It’s remembering what slow mornings feel like.
And somehow, that feels like the greatest luxury of all.
