Visit Dunedin – Why is this vibrant city worth a stop

Located about 3h30 hours from Queenstown, Dunedin is seen by many as an University city with strong European roots. The renowned University of Otago is based there, attracting many college students and giving a fresh and young vibe to the town center. If you’re traveling around New Zeland’s South Island, Dunedin is definitely worth a visit. If you only have one day in Dunedin, make the most of it and follow these guidelines.

Downtown dunedin

Start the day with a generous breakfast from one of Dunedin delicious cafes. We have tried Buster Greens and would highly recommend it, but if it is full, go for the next door one called Market Kitchen which has also caught our eye.
Take some time to explore downtown, including some marvelous Scottish buildings, like the Dunedin Railway Station or St. Paul’s Cathedral. The city center is rather compact, which makes it perfect to walk everywhere. Consider taking a visit to the fabulous Olveston historic house, appointed with prized artworks and unique objects from around the world that makes it a flawlessly preserved time capsule.

OTAGO PENINSULA

Save at least half a day to explore the Otago Peninsula. Drive until Taiaroa Head, which demarks the end of the Peninsula, and it’s home to a historic lighthouse and the only mainland colony of Northern Royal Albatrosses in the world. At Pilots Beach, you can also try your luck to spot some wildlife.

The scenic views alone are worth the trip, but if you do have some time, stop at Allan’s beach where you might see fur seals, sea lions, or even yellow-eyed penguins. The beach is stunning and perfect for relaxing or taking a walk, especially late in the afternoon when the sun starts to go down, and the light gets so pleasant.

Sandfly Bay is also an excellent option: you can decide to stay at the viewing platform or to go down to the beach. And if you’re into History, why not visiting the Lanarch Castle which is open to the public.
