Sagres – The wild side of Algarve

Algarve region is far from being a secret. Every summer, people fly from all over Europe to get a taste of the golden sandy beaches, excellent seafood, and great nightlife. We’re sure you’ve heard about places like Vilamoura, Albufeira, or Lagos: they are all splendid but very crowded. If you’d rather be in the middle of nature and not having to fight over a place to spread your towel, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to Sagres!

Cabo de Sao Vicente

Why Sagres?

By being located at the extreme western tip of the Algarve, Sagres gathers some unpopular features: the water is much colder, most nights require a (warm) jacket, and some afternoons can become windy. Moreover, you won’t spend much time deciding where to go out, since you’ll always end up in the same street (but we can guarantee you loads of fun!). However, if you fit in one of these following categories, you may never want to leave Sagres:

  • If you love the Nature and dramatic landscapes;
  • If you’re a surfer and/or enjoy the laid back surfer vibes (meaning you can go get a drink without taking your flipflops);
  • If you want to fill your days with fun activities and sports, namely windsurf, kitesurf, hiking, diving, and much more;
  • If you prefer a more low-key atmosphere and like to avoid packed places.

    Also, Sagres is usually the final stop for those who decide to drive along the STUNNING coast of Alentejo – which is a MUST do while in Portugal, is you ask us. Do expect a cool and relaxed crowd.

Explore the beaches

While the rest of the Algarve is famous for its endless stretches of golden sand, Sagres’ beaches are known for its rugged and towering cliffs and unspoiled scenery. It’s hard to decide which one is our favorite, so you should go and see for yourself.

  • Cordoama: Surfers, young crowd, jaw-dropping scenery
  • Castelejo: Similar to Cordoama but smaller and a little more “off the beaten path”
  • Tonel: Another one perfect to Surf! Usually pretty quiet, even during August.
  • Martinhal: No waves, perfect for families. Make sure you pick a day without wind – unless you’re into wind or kitesurfing, of course!
  • Beliche: Jaw-dropping scenery from the top. Be prepared for some steep steps to get there. But so worth it!

TAKE A SURF LESSON

Even if you’re not a surfer, the energy is quite contagious, and you might get the urge to try to put yourself on a surfboard. There are many schools ready to fulfill your dream, and while they can not guarantee your success, they can assure you’ll have loads of fun.
Sneakpeek Tip: We’ve heard good things about Freeride Sagres and Wave Sensations surf schools.

eat sea food

If you enjoy seafood, you’ll be in heaven. You’ll find that every little restaurant or beach bar has some sort of clams or fresh fish to delight you. Try out Perceves, something that is very common in this area! We can recommend you a few places like “Retiro do Pescador“, “A Sagres“, “Ribeira do Poço” and “A Tasca do Careca“. If seafood is not your thing, check out here more places in the area.

Head to " Rua dos Bares"

It’s nearly impossible to spend a summer night in this street without having a great time. If you go there during the day, you’ll leave clueless about what happens after the sun goes down – these bars become too small for the number of people who wants to get a drink, and is not uncommon for the road to get cut so that the crowds can party outside. Dromedario was the first bar to open many years ago, and it stills remains an institution.

Watch the sunset at CABO DE sao Vicente

No words can live up to this one. Nature does know how to put on a show! Unless you’re visiting Sagres offseason, be prepared for some company since this is quite a popular spot to see the sun going down. Don’t let the crowd put you off – you’ll feel such good energy by being surrounded by people who stop what they’re doing to watch this magical time of the day. Make sure you don’t miss it.
