Top 6 things to do in Wanaka

While many call it Queenstown’s younger sister, Wanaka does share some similarities with the neighbor city. However, you will find fewer tourists and a more chilled vibe. Having spent two nights in the marvelous Bendigo Cabin (which you should too), our time in the city was reduced but very well spent.

1. Stay at bendigo cabins

You can read all about the amazing Bendigo Cabins in this post, but we would recommend you to enjoy your time while in the area to soak up the nature and enjoy the wonderful scenery. Give yourself some rest.

2. ROYS PEAK TRACK

This half-day walk seems to appear on every New Zealand traveler’s list these days. Although the views at the top are said to be nothing less than outstanding, we’ve heard the walk itself is not very interesting and the number of tourists heading there to take the perfect “Instagram picture” completely turned us off. Decide by yourself if it is worth the time and effort!

3. Drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka.

By far one of the most extraordinary drives during our trip, the road takes you along winding hills and the majestic view of Lake Hawea. Keep your eyes wide open and enjoy the ride.

4. Embrace adventure

Similarly to Queenstown, travelers will find a lot of extreme activities to choose: from Sky Diving, Paragliding, or Canyoning just to name a few. Also, let’s not forget to mention the famous ski fields (Cardrona and Treble Cone) ready for you to enjoy the winter snow.

5. Wine paradise

Central Otago is famous for its wine, and if you consider yourself a wine lover explore the different vineyards between Wanaka and Queenstown. Check out the Rippon Vineyard, right in Wanaka city center. It offers informal tastings for free plus it has the best views you could dream of! Just don’t forget to book your spot through this website (like we did).

6. Take a walk around town

Park the car and go for a walk. There’s plenty of shops for you to walk in, many terraces to grab a fresh beer among the locals, and great little restaurants in every corner. Take a stroll along the lake and check out the famous “Wanaka Tree”, or head to “Cinema Paradiso” and enjoy a movie night in a fun and quirky atmosphere along with some freshly baked mouthwatering cookies!
