It doesn’t take much to know that we are all about blending in, sustainability, avoiding being just tourists, and falling into tourist traps. We don’t mind going crazy and spending a few extra bucks for an experience, a special stay, or an extraordinary meal. But we definitely like to make sure that it is something worth the money.
On what concerns Tulum, it’s not a straightforward destination where we can clearly state if it is worth the visit or not. The best we can do is to outline the Pros and Cons so you can make your own personal decision. At the end of this post, we’ll share our candid opinion about paying a visit to the beautiful shores of Tulum.
CONS
Non-sustainable Growth
Just by doing a quick research about Tulum, you’ll realize that it is a place surrounded by idyllic beaches in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula’s jungle. However, this once-hidden gem grew exponentially, with new buildings appearing every day and everywhere.
While some say Tulum is an eco-friendly destination, others say most structures are illegal and in protected areas. Most likely the truth is somewhere in the between, but by walking (or cycling) around Tulum, it’s easy to find constructions that hardly respect the environment. Also, the number of tourists visiting Tulum increases every year, causing diverse environmental problems: traffic, increasing demand for power (met by diesel generators), waste management, or drainage system for freshwater access. All these problems can be easily witnessed, and should be addressed, to keep Tulum as the idyllic paradise it is known for.
Tourist Oriented and Overpriced
Tulum is one of the most trendy destinations across Mexico, attracting many high-end tourists. Because of it, it is less authentic than other parts of the country due to the tourist-oriented business vibe flourishing everywhere. A great example of this is the fact that almost all beaches are private and exclusive to hotel guests. Also, the restaurants, hotels, clubs, bars, activities, and even car parking are generally overpriced and often not worth the money.
Crime/Corruption
Like it happens in all places with a high number of tourists (many loaded with money), Tulum also attracts crime and corruption. Even though we never felt insecure or in danger, drug-related crimes are increasing. These crimes are creating a bad reputation, and countries like the USA are starting to discourage their citizens to travel to Mexico: namely to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun.
PROS
- Diversity
Tulum is an incredibly complete destination where you can have once-in-a-lifetime experiences. You can visit several nearby amazingly preserved Mayan ruins or spend your time on idyllic beaches full of exotic wildlife – like giant turtles, mantas, or whales. You can hike in a jungle equally full of wildlife or opt to spend all the time you want at the numerous cenotes in the area. Each of these different activities is different and unique, but all lead to the same destination – Tulum.
- Food
Food is far from being a minor thing during our travels. Knowing this, you’ll understand that when we say Mexico is one of the places in the world we’ve had the most delicious meals, it is a BIG statement! Despite having tried incredible restaurants in Tulum, the price/quality ratio is not always the best. Find here the best options to have mouthwatering feasts, without breaking the bank.
- Accommodation
There’s a crazy amount of options when searching for where to stay in Tulum. While you can find some cheap hostels, luxury and “instagramable” places are what everyone’s looking for in Tulum. During our research, we’ve come across some of the most stunning hotels we’ve ever seen and were lucky enough to have stayed at the GORGEOUS Hotel Muare. Be conscious of your choices, and try picking an eco-friendly place that takes sustainability seriously.
- Nightlife
If you plan to go to Tulum, you’ve definitely heard about its nightlife. The party scene here is famous, and the best thing to do is join in! You will find many events like electronic brunches, matinés, sunset parties, sunrise parties, and all kinds of music/drink/party-related events. This place is home to the most exclusive clubs in the world, like Vagalume, Gitano, and Papaya Playa Project. I guess that instead of nightlife, you can just call it life in Tulum! Again, be prepared to spend a considerable amount of money, but we can guarantee that you will have fun.
Final thoughts on Tulum
Weighting all the Pros and Cons, we still believe that Tulum is worth the visit if you go to Yucatan. Although being a beautiful place with a lot to see, you’ll have a better experience if you follow these tips:
- Rent a car and plan your days visiting the surrounding areas. You’ll be amazed by the archeological sites, natural beaches, and tropical forests you will find. Most people don’t venture to places outside Tulum, so those are still relatively untouched by mass tourism.
- Visit Tulum during the low season. Everything is less expensive, and there are fewer people.
- Carefully choose where you stay. You want to make sure that the place is really eco-friendly, and has a positive impact on the local community.
- Avoid overdrinking and being involved in dodgy situations. Bad stuff is more likely to happen when you let your guard down.
