Tongariro Crossing is considered one of the most beautiful one-day hikes in the world. If this fact alone doesn’t excite you enough, we don’t know which will! During this 19,4km trail, there’s an unusual change in ecosystems that will prevent you from getting bored throughout the entire journey, and will make you feel like you’re on a completely different planet! It was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve ever achieved, not only because it was one heck of a workout but also because the feeling of finishing such an adventure is indescribable. It really lives up to the reputation and it’s an absolute must-do in the North Island. Follow this guide to hike the Tongariro Crossing and plan your adventure.
Are you in shape to hike the tongariro crossing?
It’s not an easy hike, and it will take you 6 to 8 hours. Despite being very popular, don’t underestimate it and be prepared for endless staircases, a lot of climbing, and unpredictable weather. Plus, don’t get too excited when reaching the top of the Volcano since the way down it’s way more challenging! If you’re a reasonably fit person, you should be alright. Just remember it will be demanding, so keep your own pace and take as many stops as you need.
What to pack?
- Even if there’s not a single cloud in the sky, always assume the weather is going to change. Wear layers (including a water/windproof one) as the temperature and conditions are very unstable.
- Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses!
- You don’t necessarily need hiking boots as we both used running shoes, and we did just fine. However, we came across some people using flip flops which is a terrible idea since you’ll be walking in some rocky, slippery, and irregular ground.
- Take the maximum amount of water you can with you: I would say 2L per person is ok. Likewise, remember to pack food for some energy boost!
- Don’t leave your cellphone behind. It can save you in case of an emergency.
HOW TO GET THERE?
The Tongariro crossing is a one-way track, which means you’ll need to arrange a shuttle to drop you off at the start and pick you up at the end. As you should start the hike early in the morning, it’s best to choose a close town to sleep in the night before: we slept in Ohakune, but you’ll also find options in Turangi or Whakapapa.
Our shuttle was operated by Dempsey Buses, they were very punctual, and the driver was super friendly. He was a local guy who gave us many tips about the place, and you can tell he is very passionate about it. Do book some days ahead as the buses get full quickly.
