Hike in the Second Largest Glacier of Europe – Iceland

From the moment we’ve booked our flight to Iceland, we knew we wanted to splurge some extra money on a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The options were endless, and we had a tough time deciding which one to choose. In the end, we’ve scheduled an epic glacier hike and couldn’t be happier about it!

We had never been close to a glacier before, and Vatnajökull is massive. Actually, it is the biggest glacier in Europe, and we’d never imagined we would visit it with crampons on our feet and ice axes in our hands. Most of the tours start in Skaftafel, which is around 4 hours from Reykjavik. However, if you’re not planning on renting a car, there are other glacier options which are closer to the city! Of course you’ll have to spend more to be picked up and dropped you off at the end of the day, but don’t let that stop you!

WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

Picking a tour company, you’ll be your main task. Once that is done, you just need to show up! Since tours are not exactly our favorite thing in the world, we always make sure we pick the right one. Finally, and after a lot of research, we’ve decided to go for Arctic Adventures and chose the Glacier Explorer tour.

This tour takes about 6 hours in total, and we were a little skeptical if it wouldn’t be “too much glacier stuff”… Absolutely not! We can assure you time will fly by, and you get to see much more of the glacier compared to the shorter version of it. We joined a group of around eight people, plus the fantastic Icelandic guide that went the extra mile to make this trip memorable. In fact, to this day, we remember some of the marvelous stories he told us that made us understand a little bit more the Icelandic culture and environment.

In brief, the panoramic views left us lost for words, with an impressive landscape throughout the whole walk. This wonderland of ice formations is something like we’ve never seen before and worth every cent. We say you go for it!
