Guide to Seydisfjordur – a must stop in Iceland

Once a hidden gem, Seyðisfjörður is now becoming more famous and attracting a larger number of visitants each year. This little town in East Iceland is home to approximately 700 people and requires a detour of about 30 minutes from the Ring Road. It’s also a harbor for cruises coming from the neighbor countries.

We apologize for the spoiler, but the drive to get to Seyðisfjörður is amazingly scenic! Many people consider it a strong reason to visit the picturesque village. By the time we went, the weather was terrible, with strong winds and heavy rain. We were especially focused on not letting anything bad happen to our car and arriving safe and sound at our destination. As soon as we got to the end of the road, our hearts melt at the sight of Seyðisfjörður.

The energy of this tiny town is unexpectedly fresh and vibrant. We met lots of young people from different points of the world (like the Kiwi girl who worked at our hostel), who decided to move to Seyðisfjörður after visiting it during a trip to Iceland. And we surely understand why! It has a hard-to-beat location, with a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. We spent the whole day strolling by the sea (lucky enough, the weather did get better) and exploring the surroundings. Don’t expect to have much to do besides soaking up the scenery or adventure into one of the many hiking options. Take a look at the AllTrails website to choose the best one for you!

Rainbow street is a landmark of this town, with an iconic church by the end of it. We’re sure you’ve seen pictures of it on your Instagram but head there anyway. It’s quite a unique spot. You’ll pass through many colorful houses selling handicrafts and trendy places to have a drink – when it started raining (again!), we spend an hour or so playing Jenga and drinking beer while starring at the Fjords through the window. Everything with the coolest music playing in the background.
After eating some of the freshest sushi of our lives, we went back to our hostel – Hafaldan HI Hostel Old Hospital Building. If we ever go back, we’re sure we will pick it again. We had a big private room with the most lovely view, the guest kitchen is incredible, and the whole place makes you feel at home. This old hospital has a charming architecture which makes you never want to leave. Actually, that’s what Seyðisfjörður does to you.
